Why Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
Observational studies focusing on the Inuit (Eskimo) population in Greenland
in the early 70s uncovered an interesting health relationship between the consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids and a lower mortality rate from coronary artery disease. (1,2) Despite the high total fat intake of the Inuit people compared to the general population of Denmark, the Inuit was found to suffer far less from coronary artery as well as other diseases. The difference seemed to be related to diet. The Inuit diet consisted largely of marine mammals and fish, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Following this discovery, intervention studies were designed to further document this phenomenon. One of these studies consisted of 11,324 people and showed that persons given omega-3 fatty acid supplementation had a 45% decrease in risk of sudden cardiac death and a 20% reduction in overall mortality. Why Salmon Oil?
Cold water fish generally tends to have higher levels of oil containing omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is the cold water fish, high in omega-3 fatty acids, that is largely consumed by the Inuit of the North Atlantic.
